Prop Firm Reset vs New Account After a Breach: The Real Math

Resets are not automatically cheaper. FundedNext's and Topstep's own docs show when a reset costs more than a new account, and what it resets.

What actually happens the moment you breach

Deactivation is immediate and trading is blocked

There is no grace window to trade your way back. FundedNext's own help center states that in the event of any violation of its rules, the trading account is deactivated, resulting in the prohibition of further trading activity, and that FundedNext then offers the opportunity to begin with a new account at a discounted price (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Read that sequence again, because the order matters. Deactivation, then an offer. The offer is part of the breach flow, not a separate act of goodwill. If you want the mechanics of how these limits get triggered in the first place, see how to avoid breaching prop firm drawdown limits.

The discount email is an offer, not advice

A discounted-new-account email is a commercial document written by the party that profits from your next purchase. That does not make it a bad deal. It makes it a deal you have to price yourself, against the alternative the email does not mention. The alternative is usually a reset, and sometimes the alternative is nothing at all for thirty days.

If you do not yet know exactly which rule ended the account, price nothing yet. A reset buys you the same rule you just failed, at day-one settings.

Reset is not always still on the table

The comparison you are about to make can be void before you start. Reset availability at FundedNext is bounded by stage, and at some sizes and platforms it does not exist at all. Both bounds are covered further down, and both are the kind of thing that turns a careful spreadsheet into a wrong answer.

What a reset restores, and what it quietly does not

Trading days go back to zero, which resets your calendar, not just your balance

Topstep's own help center states that a Reset returns the Trading Combine to its original starting balance, and that Account Balance, Maximum Loss Limit (MLL), Consistency Target, and trading days all go back to day one (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Maximum Loss Limit means the floor your account equity is not allowed to touch. Consistency Target means a cap on how much of your total profit any single day is allowed to contribute. Both being restored is the good news. Trading days going back to zero is the part traders skip: if you were four days from a minimum-days requirement, the reset just moved that deadline back to the beginning. Time is a cost even when it is not a line item. For context on how long that clock normally runs, see how long it takes to get funded in a prop firm.

FundedNext Futures describes the same shape on its side: traders can reset their Challenges at any time, with the balance returning to the initial amount, trading metrics reset, and the loss limit refreshed (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

External tool connections are dropped on reset

Here is the line that does not appear in any comparison table. FundedNext Futures' own help center states that if you had your previous Challenge connected to a trade copier or trading journal, that connection will no longer be active after the reset (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

If your entire risk process lives in a journal, or your execution runs through a copier, a reset silently unplugs it. You will find out on your first trade of the new attempt, which is the worst possible moment to discover a plumbing problem.

Reset is available before a breach at some firms, which changes when to use it

Because FundedNext Futures allows a reset at any time and does not require a breach first (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30), the reset stops being purely a post-mortem product. A trader sitting on a wrecked but technically alive account, deep in drawdown with a distorted Consistency profile, can price a reset against continuing. That is a different decision from the one in this article, and it is often the cheaper one, because a live account with three bad days in it may be worth less than the same account at day one.

The reset fee is derived from the original price, not the price you paid

Why a promotion on new accounts can make the reset the worse buy

This is the mechanism that breaks the blanket percentage, and FundedNext Futures documents it with its own worked example. For a $50K Flex Challenge that originally cost $133.99, the current new-purchase offer price is $69.99 while the reset fee is $77.99 (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

The reset fee is anchored to the original list price. The new-account price is anchored to whatever promotion is running. When the promotion is deep, the anchors cross, and the "discounted" reset becomes the more expensive of the two options by eight dollars.

The Legacy product shows the ordinary case, which is still nowhere near 50 percent off. FundedNext Futures prices the Legacy 50K Challenge at $199.99 to buy new versus $183.99 to reset (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). That is a saving of roughly 8 percent against the current price. Useful, small, and nothing like the number the aggregator pages advertise.

The 10% CFD reset discount and why Add-Ons enlarge the base it is taken from

On the CFD side the discount is stated as a rule rather than a table. FundedNext's own help center states that for accounts purchased with an Add-On, reset fees are calculated based on the total price, with a 10% discount, for Stellar Lite, Stellar 1-Step, and Stellar 2-Step accounts (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Two consequences fall out of that sentence. First, 10 percent off is the ceiling of your saving, not a starting point for negotiation. Second, the base the 10 percent is taken from includes the Add-On you bought, so every upgrade you attached to the original purchase makes the reset more expensive in absolute dollars, and buys you back the same Add-On you already paid for once.

How to read the saving column without conflating list price and offer price

Three columns in that table are three different prices, and the industry habit is to blur them. The list price is historical and its only job here is to generate the reset fee. The offer price is today's, and it is the only number your card will actually be charged for a new account. The reset fee sits between them and moves independently of the promotion.

So the correct comparison is always reset fee against today's offer price. Compare the reset fee against the list price instead and every reset in the market looks like a bargain, which is precisely why that framing survives.

Topstep's model is a subscription, not a reset fee

Why a "free" Reset Credit still moves your billing date

Topstep's own help center states that every monthly Rebill adds 1 Reset Credit to your Reset Bank, that a credit works exactly like a purchased Reset including the 30-day Rebill push, and that Reset Credits stay on your profile even if the associated subscription is cancelled (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

The credit is genuinely yours, and it survives cancellation, which is more generous than most fee models. It is not open-ended, though: Topstep's own help center states that credits issued on or after 12/11/2025 expire one year after being added, while credits issued before that date do not expire (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). The clause to price is the push. Topstep's own help center states that resetting your account pushes your Rebill date out 30 days from the date of purchase (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Using a credit therefore restarts your billing clock. That is not a hidden charge, but it is a real one: the reset is not free of cash consequences, it is free of a separate line item. Budget the moved Rebill, not zero.

The 2-per-day cap versus unlimited new purchases

Topstep's own help center caps Resets at 2 per account per calendar day, while placing no limit on Trading Combine purchases (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Sit with that asymmetry. The thing the firm limits is the thing it least wants you doing repeatedly in one session. The thing it does not limit is the thing it sells. A cap is a signal about which behaviour the firm considers pathological, and revenge-resetting twice in an afternoon is exactly the behaviour a daily cap is built to interrupt.

One more clause belongs in the same paragraph, because it is where accidents become permanent. Topstep's own refund policy states there are no refunds on Reset purchases at all, including accidentally resetting the wrong account or resetting the same account twice (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Two accounts open, similar sizes, a bad morning, and a fast click. There is no undo and no refund. Read the confirmation dialog.

When the reset option disappears or was never there

Platform and account size can remove the option entirely

FundedNext's own help center states that the Reset feature is currently unavailable for $100,000 and $200,000 accounts of cTrader and Match-Trader, with an exception noted for U.S.-based traders using Match-Trader accounts (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

If you trade a large size on either of those platforms, the comparison in this article does not apply to you: there is one option, and it is a new account. Check availability before you build any spreadsheet, not after.

On the futures side the constraint runs the other way. FundedNext Futures states that resets remain unlimited up to the maximum allocation, and that resets do not count toward the monthly limit of 15 new Challenges (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). So resets can be the only route left once you have used your monthly new-Challenge allowance, which is a scarcity argument, not a price argument.

Funded stage: the reset door closes for good

FundedNext's own help center states that a trader has the freedom to reset their account as many times as they desire until they obtain a FundedNext Account (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). And then it closes the door explicitly: once a trader has acquired a FundedNext account, the option to reset will no longer be available (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

That is the asymmetry that should shape your risk at the last stage of an evaluation. Every breach before the funded stage is a purchasing decision. A breach at the funded stage is a restart from the beginning, at full price, with no reset available at any cost.

A four-question decision procedure you run on your own firm's docs

Prices move. The procedure does not. Run these four in order on your own firm's help center, and stop as soon as one of them decides for you.

  1. Is reset still available for my product, platform, size and stage? If not, the decision is made. FundedNext's own documentation shows the reset feature is unavailable for $100,000 and $200,000 accounts on cTrader and Match-Trader, and unavailable entirely after a FundedNext account is acquired (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
  2. Is the reset fee derived from list price or from what I paid? Find the firm's own worked example. If the fee is anchored to list price, a promotion can invert the comparison, as it does for FundedNext Futures' $50K Flex Challenge (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
  3. What is today's new-account price after promotions, and is the reset actually below it? Compare offer price to reset fee, never list price to reset fee.
  4. What does the reset take away? Trading days back to zero at Topstep (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30), dropped copier and journal connections at FundedNext Futures (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30), and a moved billing date on Topstep's subscription model (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Worked example using the Flex 50K numbers

Question 1: available, futures product, reset offered at any time (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). Question 2: the fee is derived from the $133.99 original, not the current offer. Question 3: new account $69.99, reset $77.99, so the reset is $8.00 worse (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). Question 4: the reset would also drop any copier or journal link (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Four questions, one clear answer, and it is the opposite of the received wisdom. Buy the new account. The only thing that would flip it is scarcity: if you had already used your 15 new Challenges for the month, resets do not count against that limit (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

When the right answer is neither reset nor new account

Both options buy you the same rule set you just failed. If the breach came from position sizing, revenge trading after a red morning, or an unplanned news trade, then the cheapest purchase available is zero dollars and two weeks off.

If this is the third or fourth time, the pattern is the problem, not the price. Rebuilding after a prop firm evaluation failure is the intervention with the actual expected value. And if you are reading this within an hour of the breach, the honest advice is to make no purchase today at all: deciding with a clear head right after a breach is a skill, and the discount email is engineered against it.

Where instant funding changes the question

ITAfx runs an instant-funding model with no evaluation time limit, on simulated capital, so there is no multi-stage evaluation to restart and the reset-versus-new arithmetic does not appear in the same shape (itafx.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). See itafx.com for current terms. For the mechanics of that model, see prop firm instant funding: complete guide.

Simulated capital, stated plainly: what is and is not being restarted

Every number in this article is a fee for access to a simulated evaluation environment, at ITAfx and at the firms cited. Nothing above describes money deposited, invested, or held on your behalf. What a reset restarts is a set of simulated account parameters and a rule clock. That is worth being precise about, because the arithmetic only makes sense once you stop treating a challenge fee as capital.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a prop firm reset always cheaper than a new account?

No. FundedNext Futures' own documentation shows a $50K Flex Challenge where the offer price for a new account is $69.99 and the reset fee is $77.99, because the reset fee is derived from the $133.99 original price (FundedNext Futures Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

What happens to my account the moment I breach?

At FundedNext, the account is deactivated and further trading is prohibited, and the firm then offers a new account at a discounted price (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Does a reset restore my trading days?

It sets them back to zero. Topstep states that Account Balance, Maximum Loss Limit, Consistency Target, and trading days all go back to day one (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Are Topstep Reset Credits free?

Each monthly Rebill adds 1 Reset Credit, and it works exactly like a purchased Reset including the 30-day Rebill push (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). Using one moves your Rebill date out 30 days from the date of purchase (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Can I reset after I get funded?

At FundedNext, no. Once a trader has acquired a FundedNext account, the option to reset is no longer available (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).

Can I get a refund if I reset the wrong account?

At Topstep, no. Its refund policy states there are no refunds on Reset purchases, including accidentally resetting the wrong account or resetting the same account twice (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
