Can You Use a VPN With a Prop Firm? What Their Terms Say

FTMO, FundedNext and Topstep publish three different VPN rules. What each one's own terms say about location, restricted-country IPs and payout forfeit at KYC.

How this article is verified: Every number and claim above is checked against a primary source, ITAfx's own Terms of Service, official product pages, or the trading platform itself, before publication, then re-verified again immediately before this page goes live. Fact-checked and published on August 1, 2026 by Adrian Caldwell.

The short answer: three firms, three different rules

FTMO: VPN/VPS generally allowed, with a specific United States warning

FTMO's own FAQ states that trading while travelling to a different country and using a VPN/VPS is generally allowed, but that traders should avoid logging in to certain trading platform accounts from the United States and should avoid changing their geolocation to the United States when using those platforms (FTMO, "Can I travel or use VPN/VPS?", retrieved 2026-07-31). Note the shape of that sentence. The tunnel itself is not the problem. One specific destination is.

FundedNext: allowed unless the exit IP sits in a restricted country

FundedNext's own help center permits a VPN in Challenge and FundedNext accounts but strictly prohibits using a VPN with an IP address from a restricted country (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). The same document prohibits traders from using a VPS with an IP address from a restricted country (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). So the permission is real, and the condition is about where your traffic comes out, not whether you tunnel it.

Topstep: avoid VPNs and VPS, and eligibility is decided by citizenship and residency

Topstep does not carve out a travel exception the way FTMO does. Its identity-verification guidance tells traders to avoid using VPNs or VPS because location discrepancies can cause verification issues (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31), and its eligibility page settles access by citizenship and residency rather than by the address you connect from (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). So the practical answer at Topstep is that a tunnel buys you nothing and can cost you verification.

Privacy and travel vs. masking a restricted country: the distinction every rule turns on

Why a travelling trader is not the case the rules are written for

Two different people ask this question. The first wants encryption on hotel wi-fi, a stable connection while abroad, or a VPS so an automated setup keeps running when the laptop closes. The second wants the firm to believe they are somewhere they are not, because their actual country is not accepted.

Firms write their rules for the second person. That is why FTMO can say travel and VPN/VPS use are generally allowed in the same breath as a warning about changing geolocation to the United States (FTMO, retrieved 2026-07-31). The tunnel is tolerated. The destination is regulated, because a United States geolocation is a claim about who is trading, and that claim has consequences the firm cannot absorb.

VPN, plainly: a service that routes your internet traffic through a server somewhere else, so websites see that server's address instead of yours. Exit IP: the address that server presents to the outside world. VPS: a rented computer in a data center that you control remotely, which trades even when your own machine is off.

Why an exit IP is a claim about who you are, not just where you connect

FundedNext does not prohibit the VPN. It prohibits the exit IP sitting in a restricted country (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). Read literally, that means a trader in an accepted country who connects through a restricted-country server has broken the rule, and a trader in a restricted country who connects through an accepted-country server has not solved anything. The IP is treated as an assertion about jurisdiction, and firms compare that assertion against everything else they hold about you.

Topstep says this part out loud. Its eligibility page states that citizens or residents of OFAC-sanctioned or partner-restricted countries are not eligible to trade, earn funding, or receive payouts, and that eligibility is based on both citizenship and residency (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). OFAC is the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control, the body that administers United States sanctions programmes. Citizenship does not change when your IP address does. That is the entire reason location masking fails: it edits one field in a record with several fields, and the others are documents.

One caution on wording. Where a firm says OFAC, it means sanctions policy. Where FundedNext says "restricted countries" in its VPN article, the document does not define the list inside that article (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). Those are not automatically the same set, and any list of this kind moves with sanctions policy. Check the firm's current page rather than a blog's snapshot of it, including this one.

Severity of Consequences for Non-Compliant VPN Use
Source: FundedNext Help Center (retrieved 2026-07-31), Topstep Help Center (retrieved 2026-07-31)

Will a VPN get my account banned, or just my payout blocked?

FundedNext: termination plus Performance Reward suspended, adjusted or declined

FundedNext's own help center states that non-compliant VPN or VPS usage can result in the account being terminated and in FundedNext account issuance or Performance Reward processing being suspended, adjusted, or declined (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). Both halves matter. The account can end, and separately the money owed on the account can be suspended, adjusted, or declined. A trader who assumes the worst case is "they close my challenge and I buy another one" has read only the first half.

Topstep: no eligibility to trade, earn funding or receive payouts

Topstep's language is not disciplinary, it is structural. Citizens or residents of OFAC-sanctioned or partner-restricted countries are not eligible to trade, earn funding, or receive payouts (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). Ineligible is not a penalty you appeal. It means the arrangement never validly existed, so there is nothing to reinstate.

Why the consequence is worst on a passing account

Nobody checks your geography on the day you buy. The checks bite when there is something to pay out, and that is the cruel arithmetic of this rule: the longer you succeed, the more you lose when the location story collapses. Weeks of disciplined trading, a target hit, and then a review that ends with the simulated balance forfeited and no withdrawal. If you want the sequence a payout actually goes through, and the exact step where an identity mismatch stops it, read our walkthrough of the funded account withdrawal process.

When VPN Non-Compliance Gets Discovered
Source: Topstep Help Center (retrieved 2026-07-31)

Where it is discovered: KYC and identity verification

IDV is required, and re-verification can be requested later

Topstep's own help center states that identity verification is required and that Topstep or its verification provider Veriff may request re-verification if a prior submission needs clarification (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). "Later" is the operative word. Passing verification once is not a permanent clearance, so a location story that held up at signup can be reopened at the moment it costs most.

Citizenship and residency, not just IP address

Because eligibility rests on citizenship and residency (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31), the documents you submit are the record, and your IP address is only the thing that flagged a mismatch. Passport, proof of address, payment rails, tax details: each one carries a country, and they either agree with each other or they do not. A VPN changes exactly one of those inputs.

Trading briefly from an ineligible country can trigger a review

Topstep's eligibility page states that trading from an ineligible country, even briefly, may trigger a review by its Trust team (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). Even briefly. A single session on a trip, or a tunnel you forgot was running, is enough to start the process. That is not a KYC-documents guide, which is a separate topic, but it does show why the mechanism catches accidents as readily as intent.

(retrieved 2026-07-31)

Three firms, three columns that do not line up. That is the finding, and it is why the useful question is never "does the industry allow VPNs" but "what does the firm holding my simulated balance say, in writing, today".

What to check before you buy an evaluation, not after

Read the eligibility page before the rulebook

Drawdown limits are what traders study first, and they are the wrong document to open first. Eligibility comes earlier in the sequence, because a trader who is not eligible cannot receive a payout no matter how clean the trading is (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). Five minutes on the eligibility page, before checkout, resolves the only rule that cannot be recovered from. If you have never read a full prop-firm rulebook end to end, our beginners' breakdown of funded account rules shows the clause structure a VPN condition sits inside.

Decide your connection setup once and keep it stable

Pick your setup before the first trade and leave it alone. If you use a VPS for automation, know its exit country. Stability is the point: a consistent connection history is a boring record, and boring records clear verification.

Never let the location story change between signup and withdrawal

The failure mode is a mismatch, not a VPN. Signup country, trading IPs, verification documents and payout details should all tell one story, because re-verification can be requested after the fact (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). If your country genuinely rules you out at one firm, compare firms on fees and rule flexibility instead of masking your location: our guide to how to choose the right prop firm is a better use of the same afternoon.

Where ITAfx sits in this: ITA provides simulated trading evaluation services, and challenge fees pay for access to evaluation environments, not investments or deposits (see the risk disclaimer published site-wide on itafx.com). Instant funding with no evaluation time limit, on simulated capital sizes from $25K to $400K, as published on itafx.com (itafx.com/llms.txt, retrieved 2026-07-31). Because the balance in an evaluation account is simulated, what a location dispute actually costs you is the right to convert simulated profit into a payout, which is precisely why the eligibility question belongs before the first trade. If the difference between a simulated evaluation balance and a live one is still fuzzy, our explainer on demo versus funded accounts covers it, and our overview of how to pass a prop firm challenge covers the other breaches that end runs early, most of which are more recoverable than this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a VPN with a prop firm?

It depends entirely on the firm. FTMO's FAQ says VPN/VPS use is generally allowed, with a warning about United States logins and geolocation (FTMO, retrieved 2026-07-31). FundedNext permits a VPN but strictly prohibits a restricted-country IP address (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31).

Will a VPN get my funded account banned?

At FundedNext, non-compliant VPN or VPS usage can result in termination of the account, and account issuance or Performance Reward processing may be suspended, adjusted, or declined (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). At Topstep, the framing is eligibility rather than punishment: ineligible citizens or residents cannot trade, earn funding, or receive payouts (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31).

Can I trade a prop firm from a restricted country using a VPN?

The published rules are written to prevent exactly that. FundedNext strictly prohibits VPN and VPS use with restricted-country IP addresses (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31), and Topstep bases eligibility on citizenship and residency, not on the address you connect from (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31).

Is using a VPN while travelling the same problem?

Not at every firm. FTMO's FAQ treats travel and VPN/VPS use as generally allowed, and reserves its warning for United States logins and geolocation on the platforms it names (FTMO, retrieved 2026-07-31).

When would a firm actually notice?

Usually at identity verification, which is where geography and documents meet. Topstep requires identity verification and states that it or Veriff may request re-verification if a prior submission needs clarification (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31). A brief session from an ineligible country may also trigger a Trust-team review (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-31).

Does a VPS count as a VPN?

The firms treat them together. Check the exit country of any rented server before you point a trading terminal at it.
