Prop Firm Weekend & Overnight Holding Rules, Compared
Weekend and overnight holding rules at FTMO, FundedNext and Topstep, quoted from each firm's own docs: who allows the hold, who force-closes, and when.
How this article is verified: Every number and claim above is checked against a primary source, ITAfx's own Terms of Service, official product pages, or the trading platform itself, before publication, then re-verified again immediately before this page goes live. Does anyone actually force-close your position, or is it on you?
Two different mechanisms get flattened into the same phrase, "no weekend holding," and they carry very different consequences.
The first is a rule you must obey yourself. FTMO's own FAQ states that once a trader starts trading on a funded FTMO Account, they are required to close positions shortly before the markets close for the weekend, or whenever the rollover (market break) lasts longer than 2 hours (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). The obligation sits with you. You choose the exit price, and you carry the breach if you miss it. Missing that window is one of the more avoidable ways a funded account gets shut down; see how to avoid breaching prop firm drawdown limits for the broader risk-limit picture.
The second is a firm-side flatten. Topstep's own Help Center warns traders to avoid opening new positions after 3:08 PM CT because its Risk Managers begin flattening positions at that time (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). Its Help Center also states that Topstep is a day trading program, that all positions must be closed by 3:10 PM CT every weekday, that trading resumes at 5:00 PM CT, and that there is no swing trading, and it adds that it is still the trader's responsibility to be flat by 3:10 PM CT (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Say the difference plainly, because it is money: when the firm's risk desk flattens you, the exit price is not yours to choose. It is whatever the market prints while the desk is working through open positions. A rule you obey lets you pick your moment. A flatten does not.
The three poles: permissive, phase-dependent, and no-hold
Three firms, three genuinely different answers. Overnight and weekend are kept as separate columns on purpose: FTMO's funded rule is triggered by a rollover longer than 2 hours, not by the calendar weekend alone, so merging them misstates the rule.
| Firm | Phase or account type | Overnight hold (per own doc) | Weekend hold (per own doc) | Who closes if not allowed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FundedNext | Any account | Allowed (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30) | Allowed on Challenge Accounts, FundedNext Account, Free Monthly Competition Accounts, Free Trial Accounts (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30) | n/a |
| FundedNext | Stellar Instant Account | Allowed, no restrictions (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30) | Allowed, no restrictions (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30) | n/a |
| FTMO | Evaluation Process (Standard or Swing) | Restriction does not apply (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) | Restriction does not apply (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) | n/a during Evaluation |
| FTMO | FTMO Account (funded), Standard account type only | Must close whenever the rollover (market break) lasts longer than 2 hours (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) | Must close shortly before the markets close for the weekend (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) | The trader, by rule; an exception applies only to Swing accounts (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) |
| FTMO | Swing account type | No restriction on holding overnight, longer than 2 hours after market close (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) | No restriction over the weekend (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) | n/a |
| Topstep | Trading Combine and Funded Accounts | Not permitted, flat by 3:10 PM CT every weekday (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30) | Not permitted, Friday close 3:10 PM CT until Sunday 5:00 PM CT (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30) | Risk Managers begin flattening from 3:08 PM CT, and being flat by 3:10 PM CT remains the trader's responsibility (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30) |
FundedNext: overnight allowed on any account, weekend allowed on the named account types
FundedNext's own Help Center states that traders on any FundedNext account may hold positions overnight (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). The weekend permission is written as a named list rather than a blanket yes: Challenge Accounts, the FundedNext Account, Free Monthly Competition Accounts, and Free Trial Accounts (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). Its instant-funding program is documented separately, and its own Help Center states the Stellar Instant Account allows holding positions overnight and over the weekend without any restrictions (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Read the list, not the headline. "Overnight allowed on any account" and "weekend allowed on these four" are two sentences in the same article, and only one of them is universal.
FTMO: unrestricted in Evaluation, restricted on funded Standard, exempt on Swing
FTMO splits the answer three ways. During the Evaluation Process the restriction does not apply regardless of account type, Standard or Swing (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). On a funded FTMO Account the closing requirement switches on for the Standard account type, with an exception that applies only to Swing accounts (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). And the Swing account type is the paid-for exemption: FTMO's own FAQ states it carries no restrictions on trading during news releases or on holding positions overnight, meaning longer than 2 hours after market close, or over the weekend (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). If you are still comparing programs at this stage, see FTMO alternatives 2026 for how other firms structure fees and rules.
Topstep: a day trading program, flat every weekday
There is no phase and no account type to check here. Topstep's own Help Center, covering the Trading Combine and Funded Accounts, states that Topstep is a day trading program, that all positions must be closed by 3:10 PM CT every weekday, that trading resumes at 5:00 PM CT, and that there is no swing trading (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). A program that requires you flat every weekday removes the weekend hold with it, because the weekend is just the longest gap between sessions.
The rule that catches passed traders: permission can change when you get funded
This is the expensive misread. A trader spends weeks on an FTMO evaluation, holds swing positions through Friday, sees no breach, and concludes weekend holding is fine at FTMO. It was fine, in that phase. FTMO's own FAQ states the restriction does not apply during the Evaluation Process regardless of the account type, Standard or Swing (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Then the account changes and the rule arrives with it. Once a trader starts trading on a funded FTMO Account, they are required to close positions shortly before the markets close for the weekend, or whenever the rollover lasts longer than 2 hours (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). Same trader, same strategy, same broker feed, different rule set.
The habit that protects you costs about ten seconds: before Friday, confirm which phase your current account is in and which account type it is, because at FTMO the answer changes on both axes. If the rule change itself catches you off guard, how to know if a prop firm pays covers the broader pattern of rule-driven payout disputes worth checking before you fund.
Friday close, Sunday open: the hours you are actually trading against
Clock times are what make a holding rule plannable instead of theoretical. Topstep's own Help Center trading-hours table lists the Friday close at 3:10 PM CT with markets closed until the Sunday open at 5:00 PM CT (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
- Weekday flat deadline: all positions closed by 3:10 PM CT (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
- Do not open after: 3:08 PM CT, when Risk Managers begin flattening (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
- Friday close: 3:10 PM CT (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
- Sunday reopen: 5:00 PM CT (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Note what the published table buys you beyond planning. A firm that prints its close and open times has given you a way to check that a flatten happened on schedule. A firm that only says "positions may be closed at our discretion" has not.
What the Sunday gap does to a position you were allowed to hold
Permission is not protection. A firm saying yes to a weekend hold is a firm declining to stop you, nothing more.
FTMO's own blog states that because forex liquidity can be at minimum levels over the weekend, the risk of a gap forming at the reopen, with the risk of a larger than usual loss, is much higher (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Follow that through to your account. A gap means price reopens away from where it closed, with nothing traded in between. Your stop order does not get filled at your stop level, because no price existed there to fill against. It gets filled at the reopen. On a drawdown-limited evaluation account, that single fill is measured against the same limit as any other loss, and one fill can be the whole limit. That is the arithmetic that turns "allowed" into "ended the account." For the mechanics of how that limit is calculated in the first place, see what is drawdown in trading.
No gap sizes are quoted here on purpose. Anyone publishing a typical weekend gap number without a source is guessing, and a guess sized to the wrong pair is worse than no number.
The cost of holding: swap-free versus triple swap Wednesday
The list pages treat "allowed" as free. It is not, unless the account is built to be.
FundedNext's own Help Center states its swap-free accounts, offered across every challenge, let traders hold positions overnight without any swap or rollover fees (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). Swap, in one line, is the financing charge or credit applied for keeping a leveraged position open past the daily rollover.
On a standard account the weekend still gets billed, just not on the weekend. FundedNext's own Help Center states that a triple swap, 3x swap, is applied on Wednesday for forex and commodities (Metal) to account for the weekend rollover, since no swaps are charged over the weekend itself, and that for indices, commodities (Oil), and cryptocurrencies the 3x swap lands on Friday instead (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). On the Match Trader platform, its Help Center states the 3x swap for all symbols is applied on Wednesday (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). Read the timing again: the charge for the weekend lands mid-week, before you have decided whether to hold anything through Saturday. If you are counting the cost of a Friday hold and looking at Friday's swap line, you are looking at the wrong day.
Two practical consequences. If your edge depends on multi-day holds, the swap setting on the account is part of the cost of the strategy, not a footnote. And if you are comparing two firms that both say weekend holding is allowed, the one charging rollover is quoting you a different price for the same permission.
How to verify your own firm's rule before Friday
Three steps, in this order, on your own account:
- Find the firm's own page. Its FAQ or Help Center, on the firm's domain. Not a review site, not a comparison list, not a Discord screenshot. Every rule in this article was quoted from the firm's own documentation, which is also why each one can be re-checked in a browser today.
- Confirm what the rule attaches to. Phase, account type, or both. FTMO's rule changes across Evaluation and funded (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) and across Standard and Swing (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). FundedNext's weekend permission is written as a named list of account types (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
- Confirm who closes, and when, in which timezone. "Flat by 3:10 PM CT" and "Risk Managers begin flattening at 3:08 PM CT" are two different facts, and the second one is the one that decides your fill price (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Apply those same three steps to whichever firm you are trading with: only that firm's current terms on its own domain are worth acting on, and no restatement here substitutes for them. One thing worth stating plainly for any evaluation on simulated capital, including ITAfx: a Sunday gap on a held position moves a simulated balance against published evaluation rules, not deposited trading capital.

Which prop firms allow weekend holding?
Of the three documented here, FundedNext allows it on its Challenge Accounts, the FundedNext Account, Free Monthly Competition Accounts, and Free Trial Accounts (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30) and without restrictions on the Stellar Instant Account (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). FTMO allows it during the Evaluation Process regardless of account type (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30) and on the Swing account type (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30), but requires funded traders to close shortly before the weekend market close (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). Topstep does not permit holding positions from one session to the next (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Will a prop firm force close my positions on Friday?
At Topstep, yes, and the firm does the closing: its Risk Managers begin flattening at 3:08 PM CT, with all positions required to be closed by 3:10 PM CT (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). At FTMO the funded-account requirement is written as an obligation on the trader to close shortly before the weekend market close (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Can I hold trades overnight on a funded account?
It depends on the program and the phase. FundedNext states traders on any of its accounts may hold positions overnight (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). FTMO's funded Standard rule requires closing whenever the rollover lasts longer than 2 hours, while its Swing account type carries no such restriction (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Does a swap-free account make weekend holding cheaper?
FundedNext states its swap-free accounts, offered across every challenge, let traders hold overnight without any swap or rollover fees (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30). On a standard account, a triple swap is applied on Wednesday for forex and metals to account for the weekend rollover (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
What time does the market reopen after the weekend?
Topstep's own trading-hours table lists the Friday close at 3:10 PM CT with markets closed until the Sunday open at 5:00 PM CT (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 2026-07-30).
Is a gap through my stop loss covered by the firm?
Nothing in the documents quoted here says so. What FTMO's own blog does say is that with forex liquidity at minimum levels over the weekend, the risk of a gap forming, with the risk of a larger than usual loss, is much higher (FTMO.com, retrieved 2026-07-30). A gap fills at the reopen price, and on a drawdown-limited account that loss counts like any other.
