Prop Firm Max Open Trades: Concurrent Position Caps Compared

How FTMO, FundedNext, Topstep, Apex and MyFundedFutures count concurrent open trades, hedges and multi-instrument stacks, and what breach does.

How this article is verified: Every number and claim above is checked against a primary source, ITAfx's own Terms of Service, official product pages, or the trading platform itself, before publication, then re-verified again immediately before this page goes live. Fact-checked and published on August 3, 2026 by Adrian Caldwell.

The short answer: count of open trades is not the same as lot size

Three questions traders conflate

Traders usually ask three different questions with one phrase:

  1. How large may one order be (lot size or contract size)?
  2. How many positions may be open at once on one account?
  3. How many evaluation or funded accounts may I hold?

This article owns question 2. Question 1 is size. Question 3 is account count. Mixing them is how a competition rule gets applied to a standard account, or how a futures total-open-contract cap gets read as a per-symbol free bucket.

Which firms publish which count rule

FTMO and FundedNext sit on the CFD and forex side. FTMO publishes concurrent platform ceilings (FTMO FAQ, retrieved 3 August 2026). FundedNext publishes no fixed position limit on standard Challenge and FundedNext Accounts, and a hard 5-position concurrent cap on its Monthly Trading Competition (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

Topstep and MyFundedFutures sit on the futures side. Their published numbers are total contracts open at one time, across instruments, not a free max per symbol (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026; MyFundedFutures Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

Will an open-trade cap stop a payout? What breach actually does

Rejected order vs failed account

A concurrent-count breach is not one outcome. It is three different outcomes, depending on the firm and the product:

  • The platform rejects the order and the account continues.
  • A competition entry is disqualified from ranking.
  • The firm treats the fill as a rule breach and can terminate the account or deny a payout.

FundedNext states that opening more than 5 positions at once in its Monthly Trading Competition causes trades to be automatically rejected or disqualified from ranking (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). That is a competition product rule, not the same as its standard Challenge and FundedNext Accounts, which publish no fixed position limit (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

MyFundedFutures is stricter on stacked exposure: orders that combine instruments may technically execute even when they exceed the overall open-contract limit, and that is not permitted and can lead to an account breach (MyFundedFutures Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

Competition disqualification is a different product

If a forum post says "Firm X caps you at 5 open positions," ask which product. FundedNext's 5-position concurrent rule is published for the Monthly Trading Competition (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). Applying it to a Stellar Challenge is reading the wrong page.

FTMO's Forbidden Trading Practices list goes further than a rejected ticket: breach may mean removal of simulated trades from history, restricted platform access, disqualification from the Evaluation Process, forfeiture of potential Rewards, or termination of agreements (FTMO Forbidden Trading Practices, retrieved 3 August 2026). That is why "the order bounced" and "the account is done" are not interchangeable sentences.

CFD and forex: concurrent order ceilings and competition position caps

FTMO: 200 concurrent orders and 2,000 positions per day

FTMO's FAQ states that platform servers have a limitation of 200 orders at a time and 2,000 max positions per day, plus limited acceptance of server messages for order modifications (FTMO FAQ, retrieved 3 August 2026). Those are concurrent-count and daily-count ceilings. They are not a statement that every discretionary strategy needs 200 open tickets. They matter most when automation floods the server.

FTMO: opposite positions and unusual position counts

FTMO forbids, alone or with other persons including between connected accounts, simultaneously entering opposite positions for manipulative purposes, with an exception for entering such positions on a single simulated account (FTMO Forbidden Trading Practices, retrieved 3 August 2026). It also forbids automated hyperactivity above 2,000 server requests per day on opens, modifies, and closes (FTMO Forbidden Trading Practices, retrieved 3 August 2026). Separately, its risk-management examples include avoiding a substantially smaller or larger number of positions than your other simulated trades (FTMO Forbidden Trading Practices, retrieved 3 August 2026).

FundedNext: no fixed count on standard accounts, 5 open positions in the Monthly Competition

FundedNext's Help Center table states Challenge and FundedNext Accounts have no hard lot cap and no fixed position limit, with a note to avoid overleveraging and high margin usage (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). The Monthly Trading Competition is the exception: Max Positions Open at a Time is 5, with 5-lot Forex and 3-lot Indices/Commodities caps (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). Exceeding those competition limits triggers automatic rejection or ranking disqualification (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

Futures: total open contracts across instruments

Topstep Trading Combine: contracts open at one time by account size

Topstep defines Maximum Position Size as the maximum number of contracts you can hold open at one time, per account. On the Trading Combine that is 5 contracts (50 micros) on $50K, 10 (100 micros) on $100K, and 15 (150 micros) on $150K, with micros and minis counted at a 10:1 ratio (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). The key phrase is "at one time." It is a concurrent total, not a per-symbol allowance you can repeat across the book.

MyFundedFutures Rapid $50K: 5 minis total, breach if exceeded

MyFundedFutures Rapid Plan $50,000 publishes Max Contract of 5 minis / 50 micros in evaluation and the same 5 minis / 50 micros total in Sim Funded. Exceeding a total of 5 minis or the micro equivalent can result in a breach of the trading account (MyFundedFutures Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

How hedges and multi-instrument stacks are counted

MyFundedFutures: stacked minis and micros can fill and still breach

MyFundedFutures Cross Instrument Policy draws a sharp line. Orders that exceed the allowed size on a single instrument are automatically rejected. Orders that combine different instruments, such as 2 minis and 20 micros, may technically execute even when they exceed the overall limit, but that is not permitted and can lead to an account breach (MyFundedFutures Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). The dangerous case is the fill that looks successful and still fails the rule.

FTMO: opposite positions across connected accounts are forbidden

FTMO's opposite-position prohibition is aimed at manipulative combinations across connected accounts and related setups, with a stated exception for opposite positions on a single simulated account (FTMO Forbidden Trading Practices, retrieved 3 August 2026). That is not a green light for every hedge style. It is a boundary between single-account positioning and multi-account opposite books.

!Reject versus breach outcomes

Checklist before you open multiple positions

Sum open exposure across instruments, not per symbol

If the firm publishes one concurrent max, add every open contract and every open CFD position across symbols before you click. MyFundedFutures' cross-instrument policy exists because a stacked fill can still exceed the total open-contract limit (MyFundedFutures Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

Confirm the product: standard account vs competition

FundedNext's 5-position concurrent rule is a Monthly Trading Competition rule (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). Standard Challenge and FundedNext Accounts publish no fixed position limit (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). Wrong product, wrong number.

Verify the stage: evaluation vs funded

Topstep's Combine table is the evaluation-stage concurrent max (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). MyFundedFutures Rapid publishes the same 5-mini total in evaluation and Sim Funded (MyFundedFutures Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). Read the stage you are actually trading.

For drawdown breaches that are not position-count breaches, see how traders breach drawdown limits. For correlated forex exposure that is not the same as a published hedge ban, see correlation trading on funded forex accounts. Broader rule context sits in funded account rules for beginners. Position-sizing method after the count rule is clear sits in risk management for prop firm traders.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a prop firm max open trades limit?

It is a published ceiling on how many positions or contracts may be open at once on one account or competition entry. Examples include FTMO's 200 orders at a time and 2,000 positions per day (FTMO FAQ, retrieved 3 August 2026), FundedNext's competition cap of 5 open positions (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026), and Topstep's contracts-open-at-one-time table (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

Does FundedNext limit concurrent positions?

Not with a fixed number on standard Challenge and FundedNext Accounts (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). Its Monthly Trading Competition does: Max Positions Open at a Time is 5, with automatic reject or ranking disqualification if exceeded (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

How many contracts can be open on a Topstep $50K Combine?

Topstep publishes a Maximum Position Size of 5 contracts, or 50 micros, open at one time on the $50K Trading Combine (Topstep Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).

Does hedging count as two positions?

It depends on the firm. FTMO forbids opposite positions across connected accounts for manipulative purposes, with a stated single-account exception (FTMO Forbidden Trading Practices, retrieved 3 August 2026). MyFundedFutures treats total open contracts across instruments as one concurrent limit, so stacked minis and micros are not free extra room (MyFundedFutures Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). Always read the product page; do not assume a hedge nets to one.

What happens if I exceed a concurrent-position cap?

Outcomes differ. FundedNext competition overshoots are rejected or disqualified from ranking (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). MyFundedFutures cross-instrument overshoots may fill and still breach (MyFundedFutures Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026). FTMO Forbidden Trading Practices breaches can reach disqualification or agreement termination (FTMO Forbidden Trading Practices, retrieved 3 August 2026).

Is this the same as max lot size?

No. Max lot size is how large one order may be. Max open trades is how many may be open at once. A firm can leave lot size uncapped on a standard account and still publish a competition position-count cap, as FundedNext does (FundedNext Help Center, retrieved 3 August 2026).
